You are correct that the grille bar (normally bumper-mounted) would help matters a lot. However, its absence serves also to highlight some of the really weird design elements going on there, from the scoops to the whole "too small face" effect of the small-truck-sized clip and the very odd hood taper. No, it'd look better, but still mighty odd.

Correct on all counts, and it's killing me too. I know I've seen either customs or limited production plastic vehicles of some kind with that grill.

I'm not a fan of most GM trucks from that era.
This one I kind of like. It looks a bit like a Bulldog.
Really, most heavy trucks from the 50s and 60s were somewhat odd looking in general.
